"I wanted to be challenged in my work. I found that challenge at Enduro Softslings. The slings we make here are much more impressive."
Bas Koning (33) is officially a project leader at Enduro Softslings, but perhaps the label “jack-of-all-trades” would be more fitting, since he seems to do everything! Bas is also our longest-serving employee, and he has played a crucial role in shaping what Enduro Softslings is today. It’s therefore about time to get to know him better.
What does a jack-of-all-trades do at Enduro?
Pretty much everything, actually. It starts with tasks like purchasing our yarn, which involves dealing with various technical specifications, so you need to know what you’re doing. Then I handle the transport planning to ensure that customers receive their slings on time. In between, I take care of various aspects related to certifications. Then there’s also the daily production that I oversee together with Niels. If a customer calls because there’s an issue with a sling, I jump into the car to inspect or repair it on-site.
How did you end up in this role?
I started at Koster. I joined the company after completing my education in construction engineering. My uncle was already working there, so that’s how I got in. At first, I was making one-ton slings that were a meter long, but I quickly got bored with that. I wanted to be challenged in my work. That challenge was present at Enduro Softslings, the sister company. The slings we make here are much more impressive. We recently made a 120-meter sling! That’s a challenge!

So, what is the challenge at Enduro that you find so great?
First of all, no two days are the same. You might spend the whole day working on a specific task, and then at the end of the day, you have to rush to the Eemshaven for an urgent repair. Sometimes even to England. I thrive on that ability to switch gears quickly and work under stress. I love having to arrange things urgently. Sometimes a customer calls for a quick job, and it can be quite thrilling to see if we can make it happen. It is an amazing feeling when we manage to pull it off in the end! That’s also why customers come to us to begin with.
Is being able to switch gears quickly the main advantage of Enduro?
That has been the case in recent years. But you can see development happening, both in the market and at Enduro. When it comes to length tolerances, for example, they have become much more important. With the development of our production methods, we are now capable of producing with much greater precision. In recent years, there has also been an increased focus on R&D. I enjoy brainstorming with our R&D manager, Sisto, and to bring theory and practice together.
Is that also the future for Enduro, the connection between technical knowledge and practical experience?
I think that information about factors like elongation and stretch and how our softslings perform under workload will become increasingly important to customers. When you see how accurately we can produce within length tolerances, that’s where we can truly differentiate ourselves. It’s the combination of producing with super precision and still being able to switch gears quickly – simply by making it happen even when it seems impossible – that is our strength! That’s what makes us Enduro.
